Introduction
The 1960 U-2 incident became one of the most important Cold War examples of how an official cover story could collapse in public view. Five years before the Kecksburg incident, the United States initially claimed that a missing American aircraft was a civilian weather research plane that had strayed off course after equipment problems. Within days, Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev revealed that the pilot, Francis Gary Powers, was alive and that the Soviet Union had recovered substantial wreckage from a U-2 reconnaissance aircraft. For the Kecksburg incident in December 1965, the U-2 affair did not provide evidence that authorities concealed an extraterrestrial object. Instead, it supplied a well-known historical precedent showing that governments sometimes issued deliberately misleading public explanations when classified aerospace programmes were involved. When Powers failed to return from his mission over the Soviet Union on 1 May 1960, American officials assumed that both pilot and aircraft had been destroyed.
