Who actually claimed to see the acorn-shaped object?

Close-range object claims

The strongest visual descriptions come from witnesses who said they reached the alleged impact area before or during the early stages of military activity. Their accounts consistently describe an object that was:

  • metallic and bronze or gold in colour;
  • broadly acorn- or bell-shaped;
  • partly embedded in the ground;

He maintained that he stood only a short distance from the object and described it as a single-piece metallic structure, large enough for a person to stand inside if hollow. Witnesses such as Bill Weaver have been cited as examples of this intermediate category. He reported seeing an illuminated area but not a clearly identifiable object. What do the truck-load stories actually establish?

The military flatbed stories are among the most frequently repeated parts of the Kecksburg legend, but they also vary considerably.

One version comes from John Hays, who was a child living near the site. He later recalled seeing a flatbed truck carrying a large load roughly comparable in size to a Volkswagen Beetle, but the object was covered. Another frequently cited witness is Pittsburgh musician Jerry Betters. Retellings of the Kecksburg incident often compress different witness categories into a single narrative. A sentence such as “many witnesses saw an acorn-shaped object carried away on a military truck” can unintentionally combine:

  • people who claimed to see an uncovered object in the woods;
  • people who saw only a covered load;
  • people who merely saw military vehicles;
  • people who observed the fireball in the sky.

Once these accounts are merged, the impression is created that numerous independent observers directly confirmed the object’s shape. The historical record is more limited.
