Instead, he recalled seeing a military flatbed truck travelling near his home with a tarpaulin-covered load that appeared to be roughly the size of a Volkswagen Beetle. What Hays said he saw
According to Hays, he was ten years old when military vehicles passed near his family’s property on the evening of the Kecksburg incident. Looking from his bedroom window, he saw a military flatbed truck carrying a large object concealed beneath a canvas cover.

- the load was covered by a tarpaulin;
- he could not identify what it was;
- from his viewing distance it appeared to be about the size of a Volkswagen Beetle;
- the truck was part of what appeared to be a military convoy.
His frequently quoted remark is that he had “no idea” what was on the truck, only that its dimensions resembled those of a Volkswagen.
