Where Did the Great Lakes Fireball End?

Introduction
One of the strongest scientific arguments that the spectacular fireball associated with the 9 December 1965 Kecksburg incident did not end near Kecksburg comes from two photographs taken north of Detroit shortly after the object’s passage. Rather than capturing the fireball itself, the images recorded its persistent atmospheric trail, which remained visible long enough for astronomers to measure its position against landmarks. By comparing the photographs from two different locations, researchers reconstructed a steep atmospheric path that terminated over the western end of Lake Erie, near the Windsor, Ontario, region. Although the reconstruction became an important part of the meteor explanation, it was not beyond criticism. The relatively short distance between the photographers and the absence of a formal uncertainty analysis left room for later debate about exactly where the trajectory ended.
How the two photographs were compared
The photographs were taken independently from locations north of Detroit after the brilliant fireball had already passed. What remained was a luminous debris or ionisation trail, a common feature of exceptionally bright meteors. The photographs also had an important practical advantage: the trail showed very little overall movement during the interval covered by the images. Why the reconstruction pointed toward Lake Erie
The triangulated solution indicated a fireball descending on a relatively steep trajectory from the southwest towards the northeast. Extrapolating that atmospheric path placed the end of visible flight over the western portion of Lake Erie, close to the Windsor–Pelee Island region rather than western Pennsylvania. The Lake Erie solution also explained why many observers believed the object had landed nearby even when they were separated by hundreds of kilometres. Brilliant fireballs are notoriously difficult to judge for distance. Limits and later criticism of the endpoint estimate
Although the Detroit photograph analysis became influential, it has never been regarded as mathematically unassailable. The principal criticism concerns the geometry of the observations.
The two camera locations were separated by a comparatively short baseline relative to the great distance of the photographed trail. In triangulation, such a narrow baseline means that even modest measurement errors in the observed angles can produce substantially different reconstructed trajectories at long range. A second criticism concerns the trail itself. Opponents of the Lake Erie interpretation have argued that the photographed trail narrowed along its length in a manner they believe indicates motion away from the photographers rather than largely across their field of view. They contend that this could support a more easterly trajectory toward Pennsylvania. It is also important to recognise what the photographs could and could not establish. They constrained the location of the luminous atmospheric flight, not necessarily the location of any surviving meteorites. Large meteoroids often cease glowing while still at high altitude, after which any surviving fragments continue in “dark flight”, carried by gravity and winds. What the trail photographs contribute to the Kecksburg debate
The Detroit photographs remain one of the most tangible datasets from the 1965 event because they are physical records rather than retrospective witness memories.
