Critics, however, note that the Kecksburg incident became one of the best-known American UFO cases. By the 1970s and especially after national television coverage in 1990, many commonly repeated features of the story were already circulating publicly. Consequently, later agreement between witnesses does not automatically demonstrate independent memory.
Why independent memories remained difficult to establish
The principal challenge facing Gordon’s method was the passage of time.
Many of the interviews that became central to the modern Kecksburg narrative occurred years—or in some cases decades—after December 1965. During that period witnesses could have encountered newspaper articles, documentaries, public lectures, conversations with neighbours or previous investigators. Even if individuals sincerely believed they were recalling original memories, psychological research shows that long-term recollection can gradually absorb information acquired after the original event.
The Kecksburg community itself presented an additional complication. Because the alleged crash became an enduring local story, many residents already shared a common framework before formal interviews took place. Distinguishing genuinely independent recollection from community narrative therefore became increasingly difficult over time.
Why undocumented controls remain hard to evaluate
Gordon’s interviewing approach is frequently cited by supporters as evidence that he attempted to minimise contamination between witnesses rather than simply collecting sensational accounts. Most interviews were conducted privately, and comprehensive interview logs, timestamps, questionnaires, recordings and version histories have not been published in a way that allows independent reconstruction of exactly what each witness knew before being interviewed. Without such documentation, outside observers cannot fully verify which details were genuinely elicited independently, which emerged after repeated interviews, or how questioning evolved over time.
As a result, Gordon’s methods occupy an intermediate position. They demonstrate a conscious effort to guard against copied testimony in a case shaped by decades of retelling, yet the absence of a complete, independently auditable interview archive means the effectiveness of those safeguards cannot itself be tested with the same degree of confidence that Gordon sought from his witnesses.
