Myers’s role in the search
Ed Myers was serving as Kecksburg’s volunteer fire chief when reports spread that a brilliant fireball had apparently come down near the village. The initial assumption among emergency responders was practical rather than extraordinary: a small aircraft might have crashed in the wooded hills.
As fire chief, Myers helped direct firefighters into the search area alongside other local responders. The operation involved moving through difficult woodland in fading light while looking for signs expected from an aircraft accident, such as fire, wreckage or injured occupants. His role placed him among the first organised searchers rather than among later spectators or investigators.
Unlike many of the better-known witnesses whose detailed accounts emerged years later, Myers repeatedly stated that his conclusions were formed from what he personally saw during the search itself. Why Myers said nothing crashed

First, his position as fire chief gave him operational responsibility during the search. If responders had quickly located a conspicuous metallic object, critics argue that someone in his position might reasonably have been expected to know.
Second, his testimony remained broadly consistent over many years. While consistency alone does not prove accuracy, it contrasts with claims that accumulated additional detail long after the event.

- his statements were based on claimed firsthand participation;
- he consistently denied finding any object;

However, there are also important limitations.
Myers could report only what he personally observed. His testimony cannot establish what every search party saw or did not see elsewhere in the woods after he left. Nor does it resolve conflicting reports that military personnel may have restricted access to particular areas later in the evening.
Consequently, Myers’s account is best understood as one of the strongest sceptical firsthand testimonies rather than definitive proof that the recovery narrative is false.
