If an ordinary metal tank, machinery casing or curved industrial component were present in woodland, torchlight could emphasise its rounded edges while concealing handles, seams, wheels or supporting structures that would immediately identify it in daylight.

Why different witnesses could honestly report different shapes

From the perspective of night-time perception, variation is not surprising. Different observers may have seen:
- only the upper portion above vegetation;
- one illuminated side while the opposite remained dark;
- the object from above or below on uneven ground;
- a covered object rather than an uncovered one;
- different stages of the search activity.
Small differences in viewing position can produce markedly different impressions when most of an object’s outline is hidden.
Importantly, this mechanism does not prove that an ordinary object was present. It merely shows why witness descriptions alone may not reliably establish its exact shape.
What this mechanism can—and cannot—explain
The night-misperception explanation fits comfortably within the broader ordinary-object theory because it addresses a specific question: how sincere observers might mistake an everyday object for something extraordinary under poor viewing conditions.
It helps explain:
- uncertainty over size and distance;
- inconsistent descriptions of shape;
- reports based on only partial views;
- increasing confidence in later, more detailed recollections despite limited original visibility.
However, it cannot by itself identify what, if anything, was present in the woods. No verified photograph, surveyed impact site or recovered conventional object has been publicly linked to the reported location.
