Introduction
One of the most persistent points of confusion in the Great Lakes fireball timeline is that early reports appeared to place the object on a northwest-to-southeast course, while later scientific studies reconstructed a southwest-to-northeast trajectory. This apparent contradiction has sometimes been presented as evidence that witnesses observed different objects or that the fireball changed direction. The historical record points to a more ordinary explanation. The competing flight paths were derived using different kinds of evidence: the earliest summaries relied largely on eyewitness impressions, whereas the later reconstruction combined timed observations with photographic triangulation of the persistent train. The early northwest-to-southeast account
The first widely circulated scientific summary appeared in the February 1966 issue of Sky & Telescope. The later southwest-to-northeast reconstruction
In 1967, astronomers Von Del Chamberlain and David J. Krause published a more detailed analysis in the Journal of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada. Instead of relying primarily on verbal descriptions, they incorporated the timing of atmospheric shock waves together with photographs of the persistent train taken from two separate locations north of Detroit. Their reconstruction differed significantly from the earlier summary. Although later commentators have debated aspects of the triangulation and its uncertainty, the revised path was based on measurable geometry rather than compass estimates alone. How wind-distorted trains can mislead observers
A key reason for the apparent contradiction lies in the difference between a fireball and its persistent train.
The brilliant meteor itself is visible only briefly as it races through the upper atmosphere. After it passes, ionised gases and fine dust can remain luminous for many seconds or even minutes. High-altitude winds begin deforming this trail almost immediately, causing it to twist, bend, broaden and drift away from the original flight line. For observers on the ground, this creates several opportunities for error:
- People may remember the drifting train more clearly than the brief motion of the fireball itself.
- A curved or wind-blown trail can appear to point in a different compass direction from the actual trajectory.
- Observers at different locations view the same three-dimensional path from different perspectives, making identical motion appear to head in different compass directions.
- Without precise timing, witnesses may unintentionally combine the moving fireball with the later evolution of the stationary train.
